So, if I recall the overall evidence is: The Timing: Saera ran away in 85AC, Alicent was born in 88AC (possibly 87AC). Obviously a slight mismatch but if you assume (eg) they tried to fake Alicent’s age a touch lower to make her appealing or something this still fits. This is also *way* closer than you’d think and Alicent’s age is only known by year math, which is not George’s strong suit. The Escape: Saera was not found in Oldtown by a concerted search despite having presumably 0 money and few connections. She also ended up in Essos with, again, no money and no connections, and six months later than she left, which is certainly a while of her being in Oldtown and not being found. She even had her novice robes with her months later. The proposed solution is she was hiding in the Hightower until she delivered. The Genetics: Otto put Alicent forward with the assumption *she could have dragon rider children*, (since no one would pick dragonless noobs over a dragon girl) which would be pretty difficult without Targ (or other Valyrian) blood. Even if the Hightowers have GEOTD genetics they wouldn’t be sure it would breed true. (Preston even hypothesized Alicent was Dragon X to have the luck with dragon rider kids). Jaehaerys mistakes her for Saera. People use(d) this to suggest she might at least have blonde hair and might look like Saera. All her children are Valyrian looking when much is also being made of Rhaenyra having bastards, if a blonde woman and a brown haired man are having brown haired kids, a blond man and a brown haired woman should be having brown haired kids. TL;DR: Oldtown Conspiracy stealing dragon genes for themselves and highjacking the throne.

Herbert is of course a child of his time, with the first Dune book sitting firmly in the time of the sexual revolution and the role of hallucinogens. All adaptations have done their best to skip over all of the... erm, "beyond innuendo". Even Villeneuve only showed nudity if the people were dead already (bloodfalls on Salusa Secundus) or practically dead (Leto), and he didn't script Feyd-Rautha's kiss. Surely it isn't necessary for the storyline to detail the promiscuity of the Bene Gesserit, or the "celebrations" of the Fremen (not to mention, since all were equal, that included the kids - good luck bringing that to film without a life sentence!). But of course, it does beg the question: how far can we go in filtering out aspects that are so thoroughly woven into the books, even if "we" (read: the markets that are most profitable for film releases) with our current perceptions and cultural values find them dumb, too explicit, unethical or immoral?

I wonder if the wildling conflict wasn’t intentionally engineered from the start to give the Nights Watch something to do while the true enemy lays dormant for thousands of years. I imagine a “Snowpiercer”agreement, some early wildlings agreed to stay north and play aggressors for the benefit of autonomy.

I think the “Tyrion was their target instead of Joff” relies on how poison works in the prologue for clash of kings. In that chapter the master dies from choking almost instantly. So if it was the wine Joff would have died before he even cut the pie. I don’t remember the chapters that well, but I can’t recall an optimal time to poison the wine before he drank it. Instead the Tyrion’s pie was poisoned, and when Joff ate the pie, he died very quickly. The theory is a bit out there but it’s fu speculate about.
